Pequea Church is announcing changes to our Xtreme Youth program which will begin in January 2011. Changes are occurring in both our Junior and Senior High programs. Please read the information below so that you are prepared for these upcoming changes to the youth program.

Junior High

Over the last year and a half God has really blessed Xtreme Youth with a growing number of junior high students on Wednesday nights. Last Wednesday there were 86 students and leaders in attendance. At the same time, Pastor Groff has seen growth in the children’s program and is implementing changes to create even more growth. This has put a premium on resources in the church building on Wednesday nights. Because of this, the youth leadership team has decided to move junior high youth group to Thursday nights from 6:30 to 7:45. I realize that this move may create scheduling inconveniences for some families (including my own) but our current facility just can’t accommodate the numbers we are seeing and the programs we are planning in the time slot that we currently have. I’m looking at this as an opportunity to continue to promote youth group in the community as we advertise the change. I would also ask that you, as a parent, consider getting involved in the Xtreme Youth program. There are many ways to serve both on Thursday nights and Sunday mornings; we would love to have you as part of the team. Be active in your child’s spiritual life!

Senior High

The senior high program currently meets on Sunday mornings and Sunday afternoons. We also have small groups that meet during the week. With the changes to the junior high program we see opportunities for the senior high as well. We’ll be moving our Sunday afternoon program to Wednesday nights. The senior high does not need the same space as the junior high and students can stay out a little later so we can access the gym after the children’s ministry. We’ll also consolidate our small groups into this same program. Senior High students can take advantage of the Wednesday night meal at 5:45 if they wish and then attend youth group from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. and still get home at a reasonable time. Sunday mornings we’ll also be ramping up our programming with more variety for our students who can’t make it to a mid-week program.

All of these changes will take place starting in on Wednesday January 5, 2011 (Senior High) and January 6, 2011 (Jr. High). Pequea Church would like to say thank you for your continued support of the youth program at Pequea. Lives are being changed and the community is being impacted. Since the beginning of the school year over 300 students and leaders have been involved in Xtreme Youth Ministry.

This year senior high will be meeting on Sundays from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The decision to make a change was a long process but over the last few years we’ve noticed that week-night schedules are becoming very busy. Our hope is that more teens will be able to attend youth group on Sundays. The first Sunday will be on September 12, 2010 and will include pizza to celebrate the new year! Drop off and pick up will remain the same, please use the back doors of the church.

This year will be no exception. We will be blessed to have Jessica Shaub Meyer as our auctioneer; we’ll be looking forward to a day of excitement. Some featured items will be Adirondack chairs and a swing-set and picnic table made by the youth.

Consider donating and joining us for the largest youth fundraiser of the year. A pork-BBQ dinner will be served (by donation) on Friday, May 7 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., along with an auction preview. Saturday, May 8, the auction will start at 8:00 a.m. and continue until the last item is raised for sale. Donations may be brought to the church until May 7.

The egg making process takes about a week and is worked on daily. The youth and congregation members work from 9:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. to make the eggs. Pastor Robert Brody, Pastor of Family Ministries, plans on making the 300 dozen coconut eggs the first day and the peanut butter eggs the next two days. The process begins over at Willow Valley Restaurant where the dough is put into large bats to mix everything together; it is then brought over to Pequea Church where the gym is turned into an egg-making factory for the week. The dough is scooped and rolled into its egg forms and then placed into large refrigerators. The dough then begins to harden. After hardening the eggs are dipped into chocolate, and placed back into the refrigerators. The eggs are packaged and ready to be delivered! For Hannah Detweiler (pictured left), dipping the eggs in the chocolate is one of the funniest parts. “I can be as messy as I want; it’s kind of expected,” says Hannah a member of Xtreme Youth. However, for Pastor Robert Brody (pictured left) the most rewarding part about the experience is getting together with the youth and just having a good time. “Its what it represents raising funds for the youth,-making it possible to do what we do,” says Robert, who has been making eggs for the last 7 years.

What started off sixteen years ago as an egg-off has now turned into a fast- growing fundraiser for the Xtreme Youth group. Not only does the egg making fund missions trip’s it’s also a time when the congregation and youth can come out and be together, they eat together; they pray together and they also share special moments together. The Xtreme Youth’s egg making and sales are truly a blessing to Pequea Church.

On Sunday mornings both Junior and Senior high youth will have a continued opportunity to connect. During the 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. worship hour Junior highers will meet based on the following schedule. 6th graders will meet in room 143. 7th & 8th grade girls will meet in room 142. 7th & 8th grade boys will meet in room 144. Senior highers are given an opportunity to connect with small groups. January 31, 2009 was a chilly night here on the hill. But many people braved the wind because they knew just what the Xtreme Youth had waiting inside for them.

Each detail was carefully orchestrated from the sign-in procedure and snacks by the fireplace to the table complete with ambiance and traditional Italian fare.

Each year this dinner is offered by donation. Each year the youth is able to count their blessings as the dinner has always netted a profit and this year that number was $734.

A special thank you to the Xtreme Teens, Organizers, Justin Shepps and Lindsey Lefever and all other volunteers for your unselfish service to our church and community.
