I grew up in a Methodist church and foot washing was not one of our ceremonial practices. So, I had some reservations when Pastor Shaw encouraged the staff to attend the Love Feast, which included foot washing at Pequea Church.

I have since watched and participated this symbolic event. One time I brought a guest that was curious about the foot washing but was not ready to participate. She and I watched quietly as women, young and old, took a towel and basin and gently washed and dried one another’s feet. It did not feel awkward at all to observe, rather than participate, in this time of sharing Christ’s love.

When I have participated, I have been awash with humility. Certainly this is one of the aims of this practice. We are told in the gospel of John that Jesus requested that we continue this practice.

John 13:14-17 He instructs them, 14 “If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. 16 Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. 17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.”

I would encourage anyone considering attending a foot washing service, to do so. You will not be disappointed, whether you participate or watch the foot washing ceremony, you will surely encounter our magnificent savior.
