Prayer Can Change Your Life – Week 1

Posted on September 19, 2010

My struggle with prayer.

“Arising from the ashes of discontent, my dormant spirit has stirred, it hungers and thirsts.”

Thirty years ago I wrote those words as they came to me out of spiritual desperation. They expressed an emptiness and a longing of my heart. I journeyed the next twenty-seven years searching for God and eventually found Him.

Exodus 4:10;

Moses said to the LORD, “O Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue.”

As a young boy, growing up, my prayer life was an ongoing obligation of memorizing and reciting someone else’s prayers. These words were often written with an eloquence and vocabulary well beyond my youthful understanding. Now that I’m older this youthful obligation has left me somewhat prayerfully speechless. In other words, I have a great deal of difficulty articulating spontaneous prayers from my own heart experiences.

Exodus 4:11-12;

The LORD said to him, “Who gave man his mouth? Who makes him deaf or mute? Who gives him sight or makes him blind? Is it not I, the LORD? Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.”

I’ve often asked myself, “So why pray?” I am still awkward and uncomfortable when asked to offer up a prayer. But I remain persistent in my quest to respond to God in trust. I know He has provided me with the ability and limitless opportunities to pray from the heart – maybe not with eloquence, but more importantly, with a sense of purpose.

Psalm 19:14;

“May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.”

Prayer: Father, we praise you for all that you’ve taught us, all that you’ve given us. We thank you that when we are not sure how to pray, that by Your Spirit, You will guide us and pray through us according to Your purpose. In Your name we pray. Amen

In Christ Alone,
