Even though it has been a few months since our last post we wanted to keep you posted with what's happening in Nicaragua. Today a team from Summit View BIC church has landed on the ground in Nicaragua. They arrived this afternoon in Esteli Nicaragua! They have set up a blog online so that you can track the team. Remember to keep them in prayer this week as they continue working on the church site in Esteli that the team from Pequea began in early February of this year.

Even though the team from Pequea left Nicaragua one week ago, Marshall (the BIC director of latin America) stayed. Marshall attended meetings and took care of a few things before heading home last Friday. Before he left for home he stopped back at the job site in Esteli and took a few pictures. As you can see from the photos the work has continued. There are a few new faces on the job site which I am assuming is some additional hired help.
Marshall also commented that when he was at the Job site he saw Anna. Apparently she asked Marshall "Mister you got your hair cut didn't you?". Marshall replied saying that he did get his haircut just a few days earlier. Continue to keep this church in prayer. It is great to see all of the additional work that is being accomplished and how quickly it continues to progress! Don't forget to join the team for a time of food and sharing this Sunday night. Check out the previous blog entry for more details! |

We're Home! February 12, 2008 at 12:12 p.m. EST |

We're home! God has blessed the team with a safe arrival back to the US and back home to Lancaster. The team arrived at B.W.I airport last night around 9:30. Unfortunately we lost one bag. Lea recieived one of her suitcases but the other one did not make it to B.W.I. Hopfully she will get her suitcase later today. Thanks to Steve Rineer and Marlin Groff who came down to the airport in a 15 passenger van and trailer to take our luggage and us safely home to Lancaster. It sure was a shock to come from 90+ temperatures to Lancaster where, as I type this blog entry, it is snowing!
Thanks so much for all of you who have been praying for our team during our trip! God has blessed us in so many ways and it was a true joy to be able to do God's work in Nicaragua thanks to the prayers and financial support of the church body and community. Be sure to check with the team members and hear their own stories. We have heard tons of positive feedback about this blog and pictures; we are glad that we were able to provide this resource! Unfortunately the pictures and the small amount of space we had here could not possibly complete the picture of our trip. Pray for our team as we move back into life in Lancaster. Pray that as the team now has a place in their hearts and minds for the people of Nicaragua that we will know what to do with those thoughts and feelings. Continue to pray for the people of Nicaragua. Especially pray for Pastor Noel and his family and the church in Esteli. Pray that as the work continues, the community will be transformed and many will come to know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior!
Also mark your Calendar's for Feburary 24. On that Sunday night, the team invites you to join us for an evening of sharing. The night is still being planned so look for more information this Sunday at church!
If you or someone you know would love to experience a trip like this in the future, be sure to fill out our Short Term Missions application by clicking here. Pequea Church will be planning missions trips in the future, so please let us know if your interested in joining us for future trips. Please note that just because you fill out an application, you're not guaranteed a ticket to our next trip, and you're not committing to coming on a trip. We try and put together teams of various skills and abilities. So if you're at all interested please fill one out today! |

Final update from Nicaragua February 11, 2008 at 2:32 p.m. CT |
 |
Hola for the last time! Today we are headed to the airport in Managua. On the way to the airport we plan on stopping in Leon. This is another city where the BIC is centralized. It will be our final trip by van through the cities of Nicarauga. Here in Chinandega the skyline is lined with a few active volcanoes (no lava flow, just steam). We were able to get many pictures! It was a beautiful sight.
Yesterday the team headed to the Pacific Ocean. Here in Chinandega the Pacific ocean is just about 30 min. away. Many of the team members had not ever swam in the Pacific ocean so it was a great experience. My own thoughts were that it was warmer than I had expected. Some of us bought a few treats, even cocnuts filled with milk.
After the time at the beach we walked to church here in Chinandega. Pastor Dale, Joel, and Donna all had an opportunity to share from the stage. It was especially special for those team members due to there connections here with the previous missions trip to Nicaragua. Donna and Joel brought along a few things from home for people at the church here in Chinandega. It was a very special time for them. The entire team was able to get a vision for what the church will look like in Esteli. According to Steve's measurments, the building here in Chinandega will be about 15 feet longer and about 2 feet shorter in its width. It was exciting to see the church in Chinandega full and for us to have a vision for what the church in Esteli might look like in just another year or two.
After church we ate our last dinner together as a team. We also then had a time of devotions, debrief and prayer. It is fair to say that we are all feeling a bit exhausted some more than others. We all have put forth a lot of time, engery, sweat, tears, and love. Even though we are all fealing rather weary, we were all reminded that if we come before God, only he will give us rest.
Please keep us in prayer as we travel to the airport today and then fly to Houston and then back to B.W.I. If our flights are on time, we plan on arriving back at Pequea around midnight tonight. Pray that the team will have enough energy for this final phase of the trip. Continue to keep the people of Nicaragua in your prayers. God is doing amazing things throughout this country and it is exciting that Pequea Church and the Brethren In Christ denomination is following God's calling and bringing people to Christ! Check for an update early Tuesday for any final thoughts and photos. The internet here in Chinandega is a bit more cumbersome. God bless, we will be home soon! |

| Final full day in Esteli February 10, 2008 at 2:32 p.m. CT |
 |
Hola! Today is was a day of various emotions for the entire team. We woke up today knowing that it would be our last full day in Esteli Nicaragua. We ate breakfast and headed off to the job site. The team joined in with the hired help digging and continuing to build rebar structures. It was apparent that a lot of the team was running a it lower on energy then at the start of the week. As you can see in the photos we left the job site with a lot of digging accomplished and many other tasks involving the rebar.
Someone noted that we did not mention Rudulpho in yesterday’s update. It was apparent especially by the end of the day we had made our mark on Rudulpho. It turns out we had been walking past his house each day on our way to the church work site and past it on the way home. A few of you are probably wondering about the rock, well this time a decision went in our favor. Rudulpho said fill it in with dirt, you don’t need to take out the rock. Even though Steve and I were ready to get that thing out it was no longer needed. In Nicaragua all of the hired help only work until 12:00. At that time Steve, John and a few of the others gathered up bags of tools for a few of the workers who we had made connections with throughout the week. One of the bags went to Rudulpho. He didn’t say much but we could tell that he knew we cared for him. Our prayer is that we made an impact on him this week!
Shortly after lunch the team was lead by Pastor Noel through the immediate area of the new church site. Pastor Noel showed us where some of the wealthier people resided and also showed us where some of the poorer people live. Many of the team used this as an opportunity to pray over the city. Pastor Noel showed us one of the local schools as well as taking time to describe a bit about the life in Nicaragua. The team was led up a steep hill to the top of the mountain overlooking the city of Esteli. We gathered in a circle and prayed with Pastor Noel and prayed over the city. This was an extremely special time for the team. Pastor Noel mentioned that many times throughout the year he travels to the same spot for times of prayer and fasting. It was just another one of those moments were we felt God’s presence over this city and in the heart of Pastor Noel.
After walking about the town of Esteli the team headed back to get cleaned up before another night of church. When we arrived at the church the team handed out salvation wrist bands and the hand drawn pictures from the kids at Pequea. Each of the drawn pictures had a picture of the child who drew the picture attached. Many of the kids were very excited about having these pictures. I could see many of them showing the pictures of the kids with each other. Tonight the church had put together a special service for the team. Many of us became emotional throughout the service. We knew that this would be our final experience in worship with the church body we have become so attached to this week. One of the most exciting things for the team was that two of the workers Steve and John connected with came to church. It was our understanding that they normally do not attend church but came because we invited them and that we would be there.
Many of the team members were emotional saying goodbye to the church people we had become attached with and especially the children. Pastor Noel and many of the church members embraced us with big hugs and huge smiles. It is a time that none of the team will soon forget. This church in Esteli has a place in each of our hearts. We all will be in prayer for this church and Pastor Noel for many years to come.
Tonight the team is visibly tired. We had a great time of sharing and devotions being challenged to process all that we have experienced during this week in Esteli. Tomorrow morning we will wake up and travel by bus to Chinandaga, Nicaragua. When we arrive around lunch time we will quickly check into our hotel and most likely get a bite to eat. At 5:00 we will join the BIC church in Chinandaga for worship. For those of you who do not know, this church was the site of our most recent missions trip to Nicaragua just over a year ago. Pastor Dale and Joel are looking forward to connecting again with the people and see what has happened since they left.
It is getting late so I must wrap this up for tonight. Please be in prayer for safety as we travel tomorrow morning. Continue to pray for health. Pray for the church of Esteli and for Pastor Noel and his family. Pray for the many people we have met here. Pray that God will surround this city with his love and compassion. Check out the many photos from today!
On a side note the internet was down again Saturday night in Esteli. I will post this update as soon as possible. When we travel tomorrow I am not sure what kind of internet connection we will have. When I can I will post another update. Keep checking and keep praying! |

Hello everyone! One of the encouraging things about having this blog is to know that so many of you are reading it each day. On average there has been between 200 and 300 separate computers logging into the website each day. The Nicaragua page has received thousands of page views! From the messages we have received we know that prayers are being prayed from all over the United States! Keep sending us messages the team really enjoys reading through them!
This morning the team awoke to one of the nicest days weather wise we have had throughout this entire trip. The sky was blue, intermittent sunshine made us sweat but the wind and a few clouds kept us from becoming too overwhelmingly hot. We arrived on the job site this morning knowing that we needed to finish the remainder of the extra digging. A question was asked from home about how much is 20 cm. Converted to inches it comes out to be right around an additional 8 inches of depth. Today two small teams worked on digging the far footer down to the required height. Most of the afternoon Steve and I worked on digging out the side closest to the existing building. The digging was slow but steady. All of the hired help on site worked on digging the footer pads. On the side closest to the building (Pastor Noel and his family’s future home) all of the footer pads have been dug except one that has a very large rock in it. If you can’t tell by the photos I would guess that about 75% of the digging involves a significant amount of rocks and stones. The one we uncovered today is by far the biggest of them all, and will take many of us to lift it out once we free it from the ground.
While Steve and I kept digging, the rest of the team performed various tasks associated with the rebar. There was lots of bending, and twisting. For many, this was a welcome change of pace from the repetitive digging. You will see in the photos the rebar columns that will be placed upright in the footer pads when they are done being dug. Also in todays photos you will see a large work truck (GMC by the way). Early in the morning it dropped off large building blocks to be used during the next phase of construction. Our understanding is that the bottom of the footer pad will be lined with these blocks and used around the footer to act as an absorbent in the event of an earthquake. In the photos you will again see plenty of children helping out. John rallied a few of them up and he created a well oiled working team to help him with many of his projects throughout the day.
In the midmorning hours the President of the BIC church of Nicaragua and his assistant arrived on site. In the photos you will see them interacting with Marshall, Dale and a few of the team members. It was about an hour and a half journey for them, but having them there was encouraging to Pastor Noel and the rest of the team.
Around lunchtime a few of the team members were invited by one of the workers, who has been on site throughout most of the week, to his home. We didn’t really know what to expect. And it is one of those things that is difficult to describe or capture in video or pictures. The few of us that were able to visit his home and eventually his mother’s really were able to get a sense of what the daily living conditions are like for the majority of people here in Esteli. The home had a dirt floor and was extremely primitive. Even though it was light outside it was relatively dark inside the home. We were only invited in to see one room of the home, but it was enough for us to see what the rest of the house would be like. He introduced us to his wife and daughter who actually attend Pastor Noel’s church here in Esteli. After our short visit in his home, he invited us to walk up the mountain a bit more to see his Mother’s home. We all recognized his mother from church. Her home was very similar inside. She is living there alone. She shared that her husband passed away about 2 years ago from prostate cancer. She also shared with us that she cares for four children and two of her sons in her house. The four children belong to parents who currently live in costa rica but do not have the money or interest in caring for them. The group of us that were there took time to gather in a circle and pray for her and her family. Again this was a special moment for those of us who experienced it, but it is difficult to put into words or explain through pictures.
Around 5:00 the team switched gears from construction to kids ministry. For many of us this was the highlight of the day. After a long day of work it was energizing to see the smiling faces of the kids and their overwhelming interest in what we had for them. Chris and Abe worked on balloon animals. The puppet team shared two songs with the kids. Joel, Barb, Lea, and Linda face and hand-painted many of the children. Steve had out the many stamps and stamped just about every child twice from my perspective! Some of the rest of the team helped by handing out coloring pages and colored pencils and candy. As you can see by the photos, the children have trouble getting in lines and waiting for “their turn.” From my perspective, each of the kids got at least two pieces of candy lots of stamps and painted hands and faces. All of the kids really seemed to enjoy their time with us.
Tomorrow morning we will eat breakfast and head out to the job site once again for our last day of work! It is hard to believe that we are almost done with the work part of our trip. The entire team has bonded so close and we have made strong relationships with many of the other workers and children at the job site. Tomorrow will be a difficult day to say goodbye, but we have all grown so much through this week of work. After a day of working we will come back to the hotel and get ready to go to church once again. Pastor Noel and the church have planned a “send off” service for us. In the service we are planning on singing a few songs in english during the church service as well as presenting hand drawn pictures from the kids at Pequea. I have no doubt that this will be a really special time for the team.
Continue to keep us in your prayers. We can feel the prayer support, and it is so encouraging to the team. Continue to pray for safety on the job site. We have had a great time interacting with the children and they love to be with us, but at the same time the construction site is dangerous. Pray that we will be able to balance the interaction with the children and watching out for there own safety. Pray for health for the team as none of us have gotten any major sickness. Enjoy the many photos from today’s activities and check for a new update tomorrow! |

| Day Six February 07, 2008 at 11:19 p.m. CT |
 |
Hello everyone! We continue to enjoy all of your messages. They continue to encourage us and make us laugh. Today was a very busy day of half work and half play.
We started out the day with some good news and bad news. Good news-we had hired help who worked hard yesterday afternoon. Bad news-Rudulpho (the foreman) is still keeping us on our toes and informed us that the entire footer area must be 20 cm deeper! And we thought we were finished with most of it. Today you’ll see in the pictures that most of the hired help worked on digging the footer pads, and the team divided between some final digging and rebar work. The half day of work was successful, and we are feeling confident that by the end of the week we will have everything dug out and preparations made for the next phase.
Our interactions with the workers and people of the community were very positive once again. Even though Rudulpho gave us an unpleasant surprise this morning, we managed to make him laugh a few times-we think we’re loosening him up! Please keep our relationships with Rudulpho and the the other hired help in your prayers. Our friend Anna came over to help us again, and we got to know her more. She took the role of the foreman for a digging group (Steve, Jeremy and Lea) and was very strict-not allowing many breaks! We also found out more about her life from translation by Marshall. When he asked her who her dad was, she responded, “no one knows.” She went on to talk about her mom, and we can all sense that life is not the easiest for Anna and her family. Please keep Anna in prayer, as well as the other children of Esteli who have similar situations.
We left the site early in the afternoon to do some sightseeing. The team traveled with Marshall, Pastor Noel and his family to an overlook. We took in the breathtaking landscape of Esteli (you’ve got to check out the pictures). After some lunch at small restaurant, we traveled on a rather perilous road to reach a waterfall. This also required some hiking. The team got to swim in the falls and enjoy God’s magnificent creation.
We hurried back to the hotel to dress for church. When we got to the house (where church is held) the team set up for some kids ministry. Steve and Donna stamped the kids hands while others set up for puppets. Barb, Linda, Chris, Daleen and Lea put on a puppet show, in Spanish, (to the songs “King Jesus is all” and “Shut de do”), which was a real hit. We counted about 35 kids. The puppet team was asked to do it again on Saturday night by all the local children. The room where church is held was filled to capacity once again (even on a weeknight)! For those who are sometimes overwhelmed by the volume of Pequea worship band, they would be shocked to hear the worshipful noise that the church of Esteli can create. It is really awesome! A passionate and wise older woman in the church gave the message from Titus 2. Pastor Noel wrapped it up with more spirit-filled, inspiring words. He encouraged our group by telling us that the community is in awe of seeing North Americans working so hard; he told his congregation that God has blessed us because we work so hard. We are truly seeing that he is a man after God’s own heart and will be a significant leader in the BIC church of Nicaragua.
Tomorrow we will be headed out bright-and-early for a full day of work. We hope to make significant progress at the site, and we are crossing our fingers for no more, “Rudulpho surprises.” Please pray for some of the team members who are experiencing brief periods of stomach illness. Praise God that none of the sickness has been prolonged. Continue to pray for safety on the job site for us and the many children who will be around us since the work is becoming more dangerous. Tomorrow we will be having some children’s ministry time near the end of the day of work. We’ll have puppets, face painting and other activities. Please be in prayer that God will use the team to be loving messengers of the Gospel. Thank you again for your continued support and interest in our trip. Check out some more exciting photos, and look for another update tomorrow! |

| Day Five February 06, 2008 at 11:19 p.m. CT |
  |
It’s hard to believe that we are already half way through this week. Wednesday has been another amazing day in Esteli. This morning we awoke to a rain free day! As I had mentioned in the previous post we had some technical difficulties with yesterday’s post. Unfortunately the internet was down for most of the morning. Marshall brought me back from the job site a bit early just so we could get that post online; we didn’t want any of our families to be worried:) We have been blessed so far with a decent internet connection and little technical difficulties. The hotel where we are staying is very comfortable. Someone commented on the hard work we are doing and how nice it must be to come back to a hot shower...well I wouldn’t call it hot (at least in my opinion). Here in Esteli there is a contraption built into the shower head that is connected to electric that heats the water right before it leaves the shower head. Basically it just takes the cold edge off the water. For most of us though the cooler water is tolerable after a long sweaty day of working. Today the weather was relatively sunny in the morning, with temperatures reaching into the mid 80s (my educated guess). The afternoon brought a period of steady rain.
On the job site today we continued digging, picking, and shoveling. Some of the team worked on digging out the front footer for the church property while others did various other jobs. Donna and Abe worked on moving the water line and filling it in with rockless dirt. Abe and Donna did a great job because the site was only without water for under an hour! John worked on cutting sections of re-bar, while the rest of the team worked on digging the footer pads. You will see in the photos how deep we must go on both sides of the church (3 feet). At many places the ground is very rocky and difficult digging. We all are taking turns with the various tasks. A few of the community children returned today to help work on the site. In fact when we left for the day shortly after lunch time, a few of them remained back digging.
Some of the younger community kids joined in with a time of Jump rope. Today you will also see that there is video available to watch. Just click on the link in the upper right hand corner to watch a video montage of the week so far through video. In the video you will even see Daleen doing a little jump roping! Most of us have become attached with one local girl “Anna.” Anna has been at the job site every day working right along side us. We all see leadership skills in her as she will sometimes direct the other younger children on the site. We hope that someday she will become a leader in the church. Our best understanding is that her family does not attend a church right now. But soon a church will literally be in her back yard.
Today Jill, Daleen and Lea traveled just up the street from our job site to spend time with a local boy who is in a wheelchair. He has been watching the job site the last few days. Many of us can imagine how much he wants to be a part of digging with us just like the other children. Suprisingly his mother permitted them to come into her home which many people in Nicaragua would not do. The girls gave him a matchbox car and some candy and the little boys face lit up! Jill invited the family to come to the puppet show and kids day that we plan on having at the job site on Friday for the kids that have been hanging around the job site. His mom told Jill that she would bring him down. Pray for the boy and his family that they do indeed come on Friday.
When we left the job site this afternoon we came back to get cleaned up before heading downtown into Esteli. Many of us spent time purchasing a few keepsakes like pottery, hand crafted bowls, wind chimes, hammocks, and cowboy hats. It was a chance for us to see a bit more of the community and interact with the local townspeople. The team also had a chance to tour a cigar factory. Esteli Nicaragua is the tobacco capital of Nicaragua and known for its cigars. We also realize that Esteli is known for its coffee so many of us purchased bags of Esteli coffee to bring back to the states.
This evening was so far my most favorite part of the trip. Pastor Noel and his family came to the hotel to eat dinner with us. Marshall traveled to Managua on business this afternoon so Jill was the only one translating. Through the translation we learned so much more about Pastor Noel and his passion for serving this community. He prayed for our meal and throughout dinner we were able to hear his stories, his questions for us, and spend time with his family. Donna and some of the other women spent time coloring and playing with their two children. Pastor Noel and his family stayed past dinner time continuing to share his passion for ministry. I personally was overwhelmed with his positive outlook on ministry in Esteli. Pastor Noel moved here just a few years ago. He started church with just his family praying and singing to God right from their house. Now we can hear his desire to go into the community and bring them to Christ. Pastor Noel is just 28 years old. He has a hope to someday continue his education and go to school to receive his Doctorate in theology. Currently Pastor Noel has his undergraduate in theology from the college in Esteli. Pastor Noel explained his plan to us for reaching the community through what I would call satellite churches or house churches. These “satellite churches” would meet in people’s homes with similar interests throughout the community. On of his lasting quotes left in my mind was when he said, “I may not die here in Esteli but I am not going to leave without making a difference.”
We can praise God for the health of the team. All of us have been able to stay healthy besides a few sores and sunburn. Pray for continued health as we finish out our week of work. Pray also for Pastor Noel and his family. Pray that God will use him to influence this community with the Love of Christ.
On a humorous note...as I was finishing up typing this entry I heard a lot of commotion down the hall...turns out a gecko found its way into Lea and Chris’s room. Thankfully Donna and Dale came to the rescue and nudged him back out the window! Remember to check the photos and video found in the upper right hand corner. Look for another update tomorrow. |

| Day Four February 06, 2008 at 11:51 a.m. CT |
 |
Whew what a day. Today the entire team was visibly exhausted after a long and hard day of work. Unfortunately last night I was almost done with the blog entry for day four when I accidentally lost all of the text. If you can imagine this was a bit frustrating. This morning at 6:30 a.m. CT we no longer have internet at the hotel. Our understanding is that the internet is down in the city. Anyway today we continued to do a lot of digging, picking, and shoveling. Most of us are a little sore, and stiff, but at the end of the day the work that we accomplished was very visible, which was a good encouragement for the team.
This morning (Tuesday) we woke up to intermittent rain showers. Steve at breakfast instantly threw out a new quote to us from home. “Rain by 7 done by 11”. Thankfully that little quote held true. We had rain throughout most of the morning but it ended by 11. By the end of the day we completed digging the footer on the side of the church closest to the existing building. Throughout the day we also finished digging the back wall and the other side. Part of the team also worked on digging a new path for an existing water line which coincidentally was installed just a week ago:). You will see the trench being dug in some of the photos in the front of the property.
Rudulpho (the foreman) continued to keep us surprised with changes to “the plan”. You will be able to see in the photos what we dubbed as Rdulpho’s “birthday cake”. A form that you could see, John, Linda, and some of the rest of the team working on throughout the afternoon. John said this is something he has never done before.
In the photos you will also note a lot of additional workers working right along side us. The team arrived on site in the morning around 8:00 to a team of a few younger kids, and teens already working. Right away we realized that we needed additional tools to meet the demand of all the additional help. Dale and Marshall headed to the local store to pick up extra shovels and picks. All of the community helpers worked really hard at digging and picking. The team brought along extra pairs of gloves which were a great gift to the new helpers. This gave them a sense of “belonging” with the rest of the team.
You will also note in a few of the photos Abe, Marshall, Jill, Pastor Noel and his wife. Before coming to Nicaragua, Abe decided that he would use his second suitcase to bring a lot of Janie’s (his wife’s) clothing to be left with the church here in Esteli. Marshall and Jill explained to the Pastor and his wife how Janie had recently lost her battle with cancer. Marshall went on to explain the influence that Janie had on her own community holding bible studies in her house for many years. Even though there was a significant language barrier it was very clear that they were visibly moved by what was happening. The teams prayer was that Janie’s clothing would be distributed to community women, and through the clothing the Holy Spirt would influence the lives of the women who wore her clothing. We also prayed that her story and clothing would inspire women of this community to influence the women of their own community here in Esteli.
A few of you commented on Monday’s photo of the team riding in the back of a pick-up truck. So far, after each day of work Pastor Noel and his pick-up truck brought the team back to the hotel. Understanding the bumpy roads in Esteli this has been a truly interesting experience each afternoon.
The next two days the team will only be working at the job site for part of the day. Wednesday (today) we plan on heading to the local shops in Esteli to pick up some merchandise from the local town. Thursday we plan to do a little site seeing heading to a near by waterfall and overlook. Please pray for the team as we interact with the people outside of the job site. Today (Wednesday) we will hopefully finish digging the front footer of the church site. Rudulpho informed us at the end of the day yesterday of an interesting technique which only seems to be used in construction in Nicaragua. The team will dig out additional width and depth for “footer pads” in about 7 sections on each long wall. This is apparently needed to make the building earthquake resistant.
Continue to pray for our interaction with Rudulpho. Translating construction terms continue to be a challenge. Pray that the team is not overwhelming Rudulpho and that he does not get frustrated. Pray for continued health and safety as we continue to work on the job site and go about our activities throughout the city of Esteli. As we move on in construction the job site will become a bit more dangerous. Pray that as the young people interact with us they can understand the danger. Pray that the love of Christ will shine through our team and be visible to the people of the community. Expect another quick update soon.

| Day Three February 04, 2008 at 10:51 p.m. CT |
 |
Good day everyone! It continues to be a blessing to receive messages from home. Each night the team gathers after dinner for a time of devotions and recapping the day. We also spend time reading off the team messages and then dividing out the laptop with all the individual messages. Today you will notice many more photos as this was the first full day of work.
This morning we woke up to breakfast at the hotel. Shortly after that we made the journey to the church building site. The site is about 1 mile away from our hotel. You will see many photos of the job site today. John tells me that the actual size of the new church will be 2,840 square feet. We arrived today to the site where Pastor Noel and his family will live once the church is built. That is the building you will see in the pictures of the job site. Our morning started off with digging out four different stumps/partial trees. All of this work was done by hand. Shovels, picks, digging irons, and eventually an axe. Time consuming, and labor intensive it was, but there was cheers of joy after each stump was removed! A few of the team members also worked on moving a neighbors fence back about 4-5 inches. It is important to understand that in Nicaragua they use every spare inch of land. Pastor Noel is very adament about using every inch of the property even if it means that the walls are not square. Because of the intense work that was involved this was pretty much all we accomplished before lunch.
After lunch, which was very filling and included rice, chicken, salad, and plantaines, we started to see the outline of the church building. John and Steve introduced a laser level system to the foreman hired by the church. Working in Nicaragua it was very likely that he had never experienced such a system. The method they would have used to do the same task would have likely taken the remainder of the afternoon. Thanks to John's equipment leveling the batter boards was complete in about 20 min. After each corner was leveled Steve, John, Abe, Pastor Noel, Marshall(director of BIC latin missions), and the foreman worked hard at placing the square lines. With patience and translating, John and Steve were able to show the benefits of building a square building. Thankfully the foreman was receptive of the suggesstions that will help future teams continue to build the church.
Throughout the day of work, the team had lots of time to interact with people from the community. Many neighborhood children were attracted to our site, and we got to spend some "play time" with them-throwing football, blowing up balloon animals, and making simple communication through smiles and the few Spanish words that we know. Many of the kids were there because they either left school early or don't go to school anymore (most only attend until 5th grade). At times they were hard to manage-all of them begging for a piece of candy or a balloon animal. We concluded next time we'll need to set up a better organization system. The pastors daughters, Pearl and Abigail, really enjoyed playing with us (they'll be in many of the photos throughout the week). We are excited for more interaction with the kids as we take on puppets, face painting and other activities.
Once the square lines were in place the team started to dig the footers. This will most likely be our task for the entire day tomorrow and for at least the next couple of days. Digging footers by hand in a dry ground filled with lava rock is hard labor. The team took turns shoveling, and using the picks, and digging irons. As you can see in the photos, even though we spent a decent amount of time on digging, not a whole lot was accomplished. Tonight during devotions and debrief, we talked about how nice it would be to have a backhoe but realized that with each shovel of dirt we dig we are getting closer to having a wonderful building for this community which will be a tool to build the Kingdom. God is doing some amazing things in this town already and the team can all see how much of an impact that this building will have in this section of Esteli.
So it was a great day and hard work! A praise is that John got his suitcase! It was brought from the airport to our hotel (about 3 hours), but we were all at the job site. But praise God-somehow a man painting portions of our hotel new where we were working and sent the delivery to us! John was very grateful, and so were the rest of us! :D Also, we are all very healthy and feeling good after our first day of work. Please pray for energy and strength in building, as well as safety on the job site. Pray that God will use us in many ways on the job site, not only for the physical labor-pray that we would continue to have positive interaction with the foreman, the church and the community. Be ready for another update tomorrow. We try to put into words everything we're experiencing, but it is really hard to express. You'll have to be sure to ask us each when we get home-we will have many stories about how we all were individually impacted. Also, don't forget to check out the pictures-they speak volumes. |

| Day Two February 03, 2008 at 11:18 p.m. CT |
 |
As promised we have a second update today. You can check out pictures by using the "photos" button in the upper right hand corner. The team just got back from church and we also ate dinner here at the new hotel. Tonights meal included chicken, a salad, papas fritas (french fries), rice of course, and some special hot sauce which John entitled "bug killer" sauce. In other words if we put it on our food it will kill any harmful things that would make us sick. We'll see, thankfully we have all kept healthy.
Also tonight we enjoyed a powerful worship service which meets in a house. It was really clear that this local church is bursting at the seams. The need for a new building is evident and it is really exciting for the team to see how a new building will make an impact on the local community. Abe and the team also noted the number of children in the church. The number of kids around matched the number of adults if not exceeded it. The entire service was in spanish. We were able to pick up on a few of the worship songs like "how great thou art". This provided an opporunity for us as a team to be singing in English while the rest of the church sang in Spanish. Pastor Dale shared for a few minutes while Jill translated. We found out that his jokes are hard to translate in spanish too! The church was really excited to know that Pastor Roberto is here! Many of us were intrigued by the fact that when the christians pray together in Nicaragua, they all say their individual prayers out loud. It is a big beautiful mess of words lifted up to God. We definitely felt the presence of the Holy Spirit during the worship we experienced today.
It has been encouraging to have such a warm welcome from the people of the church we are serving. You'll see in the pictures, decorated the home they meet in for us and made a banner that says, "Welcome our friends to the Brethren in Christ church of Esteli". They also served us some delcious cake and coke, treating us as their special guests. We could sense the excitement that they all had to, as Pastor Noel stated, "begin the dream" that they've had for so long. It is amazing how some warm greetings and hospitality can make us feel at home so quickly.
So now we're off to bed. We need to get some rest for our first day of hard labor tomorrow. From what we know, we will probably be starting off with some planning and preparation for building and then some digging. We'll need to buy shovels because, well...they wouldn't pass through customs. Please keep John's carry-on bag in prayer as it is possibly going to arrive tomorrow morning. Pray for Jill that she has continued strength and a clear mind because she is working so hard. As the team heads off to our first day of work on the site, keep praying for health, safety and that our time will impact the community of Esteli. By the way we are getting your messages. Each night we read over the group wide messages, all of your notes have been very encouraging. Feel free to leave us a message or contact someone individually by using the contact us button at the bottom of this entry. |

| Arrived in Esteli Nicaragua February 03, 2008 at 4:55 p.m. CT |
| |
Hello everyone! We have made it safely to Esteli, Nicaragua! This morning at 8:00 we left our hotel in Managua, to attend the final days activities at the Brethren In Christ "General Conference" for Nicaragua. There was probably nearly 300 people in attendance including pastors, and what I could determine as "delegates" from nearly all of the churches across Nicaragua. We experienced music, and the general meeting. We may detail more of this later tonight.
We left the meeting and headed to Esteli. Around 1:30 we left the meeting and traveled by school bus. We arrived here around 4:15 CT. The team is getting settled in, we are leaving in about one hour for church. The pastor says that the service will be over at "about 7:40". We then plan on eating dinner after the service. Expect an update later tonight with photos from today!
Currently you can be in prayer for the team in these ways. We have done a lot of traveling, pray that we continue to keep our energy level up, pray that we get a good nights sleep tonight. Also continue to pray for John's carry on bag. We still do not have it in our possesion. Pray that we get it tomorrow morning. Continue to pray for health for the whole team. So far all of us are staying healthy. |

| Day One February 02, 2008 at 5:37 p.m. CT |
 |
Hola everyone! We are currently taking a little break after a long day of traveling and adventures. As noted in the previous post we safely arrive in Managua, Nicaragua earlier today. Our flights were all on time; we arrived at B.W.I airport in plenty of time for depature and made our connection in Houston with no difficulties. John is missing one bag. Unfortunatly on our first flight there was not enough room for his carry on, we hope to get his bag back tonight before we move on tomorrow.
After we checked in at our hotel in Managua we took an opportunity to travel just a few minutes away to a local market where there was a lot of hand-crafted items, produce, and even meat. It was our first real experience with the culture in Nicaragua. We saw the poverty level first hand. Young children latching on to us seeking money or even our green believe, grow, serve, share wrist bands. The time out was also a good team building opportunity; we had an opportunity to bond together better as a team and experience life together in Nicaragua. Jill is doing an amazing job at translating! Today we discovered that she is a real pro. We are very blessed to have such a diverse group in abilities, ages, and even languages.
As you can see, you can click on the "photos" link in the upper right corner of this entry to see photos from today. Due to the large amount of travel today there are not very many photos. But in the days to come you will hopefully get a clearer picture of our day's activites. Tonight we are going to eat our first meal, besides airline food, in our motel. Our best guess is that it will be pretty "Americanized", probably one of the last times we will have this type of food. Check back tomorrow for another update. Tomorrow morning we are leaving to head to the BIC conference in Nicaragua which is about one hour away. After that we will head to Esteli. Also, feel free to contact us using the "contact us" link below. |
