You Are My Sunshine, My Only Sunshine…

Hello to all! What a beautiful day God provided for us today. We had sun all day today-a first this week. We won’t talk about the heat and humidity. We also had a very productive day. Two groups were doing flooring today and from what I understand they also had a sweating contest. Not exactly sure who won. The other two groups were drywalling again today. Chris and Joy had to do the insulation dance today because we finally finished that project. Drywall is tough to do but we are plowing thru it. We have awesome teams to work with. We even got a visit from the kitchen cooks who delivered popsicles this afternoon. What a treat on such a hot day. This evening we are getting ready to drive to all the job sites to see each other’s work followed by a trip to Dairy Queen. Brownie Blizzard here I come!! We will be working tomorrow until lunch and then we will come back here to clean up. We are hoping to be on the road home by 3 or 4pm. Don’t forget we are stopping at The Dollywood Splash Park on the way home. Thank you Pastor Brody for the hotel reservations. Thank you for all the comments. We have been reading them each morning during breakfast. Since we will be on the road tomorrow night I’m not sure if we will have time to write on here so I’d like to add a personal note. Happy Birthday to my husband Mark on Saturday. I hope you have a terriffic day with our children. Please don’t let them bake your birthday cake until I can help. I am sorry I am missing your special day but know that I love you very much and will be thinking of you all day. Can’t wait to see you Sunday. Luv Ya!

What do you have when you combine a cow with a van?

It’s a Moooooving!!! HaHa! But that’s just what we did today. We all had a hard day of work. There was a crew painting, and most of the rest were drywalling 2 different houses. And yes, more insulation for Chris and Joy! Again, ITCHY!!! After a delicious lunch at a neighboring church, we all went back to work. What a thunderstorm we had this afternoon. Dinner of course was delicious, followed by a visit by some special guests. Two women from the local Rotary Club and a guest from the Pass Christian Code Office came in to speak to us about how the funding comes available for homes and how they decide who to build for. What interesting stories they had to tell. We can’t wait to share them with you at home. We are also sending our sympathies with Stephnie Carroll (who is here with us) and her family. Steph’s grandfather passed away this morning. She and Emily Brody are going to brave the airport on Friday so that she can be home for his funeral. Please keep Steph and her family in your prayers and also Steph and Emily in prayer as they travel on Friday. We are excited that we have passed the half way point of the week and are looking forward to the water park on Saturday. Hopefully Pastor Brody found us a 5 star hotel to stay in with all the spa treatments included! Robert-this is for you. A group of giraffes are running one way and another group is running towards them. What do you call it when they meet? A Giraffic Jam!!! Love you all.

We’re Singing In The Rain…

Welcome Day 2!! After a very rainy day 1, and listening to thunderstorms all night, today’s weather report sounded grim. We had a 90% chance of thunderstorms all day today and we were starting to feel like building an ark. We had a very rainy morning which included getting a truck and van stuck in mud. By lunch time, this bright yellow thing in the sky came out. Some say it is called the sun!! What a beautiful afternoon. We had a team painting away, another drywalling like crazy, and another putting up insulation. How itchy!! We had a delicious supper of BBQ ribs, potatoes, and delicious salad. Several in the group decided to walk down the street to the Gulf to take a swim, while the dedicated few went shopping. We’re finishing up the night with popcorn and board games. Thanks to all the hair in the girls dorm, we have 2 showers that won’t drain tonight. Sorry Ryan! We heard that the weather up there is beautiful and are beginning to be thankful for Lancaster County summers. We miss you all dearly and can’t wait to be home.

The work week begins!

Well, the day started with a delicious breakfast that consisted of french toast stuffed with fruit, bacon, and cereal. After we ate we had a devotion time at 7:30, then we clean up and got the vehicles ready to go to the job sites. At one of the job sites they painted the under side of the house and primed the walls in the house, at the other job site one group was insulating the floor under the house and then putting plywood over the insulation. The other group was insulating the ceiling and walls and putting drywall on the ceiling. At 4:00pm we cleaned up and went back to where we are staying. We had supper, and then some of us went to the dollar store and some played basketball and volleyball. Lights out by 10:00pm. Good Night.

We have arrived

Hello from Mississippi! After a rather uneventful drive, we have made it, arriving earlier than expected. We had extra time to visit the Friendship Tree, a 500 year old tree. Afterwards, we subjected Brian to his first Applebees experience, followed by some time at the park and Gulf. We are now getting ready for a good nights sleep so we can be as productive as possible on our first day. Please pray for cooler weather and good health as we set off to help others. Miss you all!!

Youth team departs for Mississippi

Late Saturday afternoon a team of 25 youth and youth leaders left for a week long trip in Pass Christian Mississippi. As the team gathered people from the community and church gathered to pray and encourage the team before the hit the road. The team will drive for nearly 24 hours straight before arriving in Mississippi around dinner time on July 5.

Pass Christian is on Mississippi’s coast and is one of the communities most devastated by Katrina. The 30-foot storm surge killed 22 people, destroyed nearly all business property, and damaged or destroyed 90 percent of the town’s homes. Initially about 25 percent of Pass Christian’s 6,500 residents remained. Like virtually all of its residents, city leaders suffered immense personal loss. City Hall is now in a doublewide trailer. The library is in a small trailer. The storm set back the city 150 years, to its early days as a rustic resort area. But many new houses are springing up and the city is being rebuilt.

The team from Pequea Church will be working with Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS). MDS has purchased property in Pass Christian and set up a long-term project with three mobile homes and a storage shed. Together with the local recovery committee and readily available funds, MDS has completed 24 new builds, 15 major repairs and 42 minor repairs. Over the summer Pass Christian will be visited by youth groups from all over the US and Canada. MDS will continue it’s work in Pass Christian through this fall.
