Day two- Market, Beach, and Church

Posted on January 4, 2010

The team woke up this morning in El Viejo sleeping in beds for the first time in quite awhile. Many of us appreciated the pillows and beds instead of plane or bumpy van naps! We started out the day with our first breakfast in the hotel; pancakes have become the top pick out of our three options. We also discovered Manny’s ability to eat the lots of leftovers! We left the hotel and took a walk around town. As you can see from the photos, we visited the local market. At the market we saw lots of sights including the meat market.

The team had an opportunity to spend a few hours at the beach this morning and part of the afternoon. Dan brought along a baseball and it was a “hit”. What started with throwing the ball back and forth with one boy turned into a pick up game of stick ball. Manny, Sugey, Dan, Kelly and Jeremy played baseball until the ball literally fell apart. The team also spent time in the warm waters and playing a team favorite card game called Canasta. At the beach we also ate lunch; some of us had chicken others had shrimp, fish, or beef. Sugey, Manny, and Kelly decided to climb some rocks along the ocean, where apparently manny was “attacked” by over 20 crabs. According to Sugey and Kelly, there was only one crab?! Dan especially made some connections with the local kids who were trying to sell gum or other candies to anyone who will buy. As we left the beach we realized we would likely never see these kids again-this caused some heavy thoughts and prayers among us.

Tonight the team had our first experience at the church in El Viejo. As you can see by the photos, the roof has been taken off the church and there is currently a tarp covering part of the church. Daryl, Geoff, and Marlin began scoping out the scaffolding and other construction details. We experienced the church service where there was lots of worship; both Marshall Poe and Pastor Marvin spoke. The team was introduced one by one to the church, and once the service was over, we spent time meeting and greeting a lot of the church members. We are excited to get to work tomorrow morning! The team enjoyed a dinner together and closed the night out with a time of prayer, devotion and sharing.

Keep the team in prayer tomorrow as we head to the job site. Pray for safety in working and energy as we work in the heat of Nicaragua. Pray for our interaction with the workers and church community through our work and time in Children’s Ministry.

Thanks to each and every one of you for your serving, your hearts, your smiles, your hard work, your stories, the pictures are all so amazing and beautiful and you can see the reward in the faces of the people of El Viejo ….. and oh, those children!

We’re so grateful for YOU and we hope you feel our prayers and love!

The Jesus (Reese’s) shirt is amazing …. can you bring one of those back for Cody? (I believe we must have stock in the Hershey’s Company for that candy!)

Marlin and Dottie, we are eagerly awaiting the arrival of our special guest (can’t wait)! With love from “the ranch” ….

    Hi Everyone,

We look forward to the great updates and pictures, and are keeping you all in our prayers. The love and care you all have for each other and the people you come in contact with shows so well in the pictures! The faces of the children are so beautiful – what an opportunity to share Jesus and help to mold those sweet little lives for Him! Take care and stay well!
